Moving to Denton County Guide

Denton County stretches from the edge of DFW Airport to rural horse country north of Denton. Where you land within it changes your commute, schools, lot size and tax bill.

How the county is laid out

Southern Denton County — Flower Mound, Highland Village, Lewisville, Double Oak — is established suburban living close to the airport and major employment centers. The western side — Argyle, Bartonville, Copper Canyon, Lantana and Northlake — leans toward larger lots, newer master-planned communities and a more rural feel. The city of Denton is the county seat, with two universities and a historic downtown square.

School districts don't follow city lines

A single town can be split among several ISDs, including Lewisville, Argyle, Denton and Northwest. Always confirm assigned schools for a specific address directly with the district.

Commuting

I-35E and I-35W are the county's main north–south routes, with SH 121, SH 114 and FM roads linking them. DCTA's A-train runs between Denton and Carrollton, connecting to DART. Test your commute at rush hour before you choose a neighborhood.

Taxes, HOAs and special districts

Texas has no state income tax, but property taxes are significant and vary by address. Many neighborhoods have mandatory HOAs, and newer communities may carry MUD or PID taxes. Factor all three into your budget.
